Move-Out Cleaning Checklist: A Room-by-Room Guide

Moving out is busy enough without worrying about the cleaning. Whether you rent an apartment in Palmerton or you are handing a house over to new owners, a thorough move-out clean protects your security deposit, avoids last-minute disputes and leaves the place ready for the next person. Here is the room-by-room checklist our team works through on every move-out job.

Before you start

Clean an empty home whenever you can. Once furniture and boxes are gone you can reach baseboards, corners and floors properly. Work top to bottom in each room, so dust from shelves and ceiling fans lands on floors you have not cleaned yet.

  • Read your lease or move-out notice for any specific cleaning requirements.
  • Take photos of each room when you finish. They are your record of the condition you left it in.
  • Leave yourself at least a full day. A two-bedroom home usually takes longer than people expect.

Kitchen

The kitchen is where landlords and buyers look first, and where grease and crumbs hide.

  • Empty, wipe and dry every cabinet and drawer, inside and out.
  • Clean the inside of the oven, the racks and the drip pans or stovetop grates.
  • Pull the fridge out if you can, clean behind and under it, then wash the shelves and drawers. Leave the door slightly open if the power will be off.
  • Degrease the range hood and filter, the backsplash and the cabinet fronts near the stove.
  • Scrub the sink, faucet and drain, and run the dishwasher empty with a cleaner.

Bathrooms

  • Descale the shower head, faucets and glass doors.
  • Scrub grout lines, the tub or shower base and the caulk edges.
  • Clean the toilet fully, including the base, the hinges and behind the tank.
  • Empty and wipe out the vanity and medicine cabinet, then polish the mirror.
  • Dust the exhaust fan cover, which is easy to forget and easy to spot.

Bedrooms and living areas

  • Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures and the tops of door frames.
  • Wipe baseboards, light switches, outlet covers and door handles.
  • Clean the inside of closets, including shelves and rods.
  • Wash windows on the inside and wipe the sills and tracks.
  • Vacuum carpets thoroughly, then sweep and mop hard floors last.

Small repairs worth doing

A clean home with obvious damage still costs you. Before you hand back the keys, fill small nail holes, touch up scuffed paint, tighten loose cabinet handles and replace burned-out bulbs. These are quick jobs that make a big difference at inspection.
